Rutgers (W)
For the women of Rutgers Rugby, "rugby isn't a sport, it's life. This isn't pain, it's progress. And these girls aren't my teammates, they're family."
Flyhalf Kristen Siano led the Scarlet Knights last fall to a winning record. In their five league games, Rutgers has given up 12 points. The Knights are also blessed with a tough forward pack and speed out wide.
Head Coach Ken Pape said getting as many as 35 to practice is a key piece of the puzzle for the Knights. "On the field we are getting the depth, and I feel we can be one of the teams in the mix," said Pape, who is getting some good work from Liz Hussey, who is the pack leader, and former Junior All American scrumhalf Miranda Previte.
The Rutgers rugby team is looking to meet girls at Rutgers who are interested in playing rugby. No experience is necessary. The program leaders will teach you all you need to know. Most of Rutgers players hadn't played before when they started in college.
Players at Rutgers come from a diverse athletic background, and have participated in sports such as soccer, softball, track, basketball, wresting, martial arts, and gymnastics before joining the rugby team. Rugby players come in all shapes and sizes. As long as you are willing to stay fit, take some hits, and have a good time, you should give rugby at Rutgers a try.
Practices during the fall and spring semester are Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:30-7:00pm and Fridays from 5:00-7:00pm at the Busch club sports field.
